We, as ECPM MEPs, are concerned about the freedoms and rights of Christians in Iran. Estimates say there are between 300,000 and 1,000,000 Christians (<1% of the population) living in Iran and many of them are harassed, beaten or jailed regularly for their faith. In jail they are often tortured and denied healthcare. The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights has called on Iran to temporarily release all its political prisoners during the pandemic.

On Wednesday 20 February, the European Christian Political Movement (ECPM) launched its campaign for the European elections. The ECPM is the only European political party with an explicit Christian profile. To contribute to the wellbeing of the people in Europe, the ECPM united parties and politicians around Christian values to generate political solutions to EU’s key problems. ECPM presently has 18 member parties, 40 individual members (national and regional parliament members) and 30 associated organizations across Europe.

Asia Bibi's death sentence revoked by Pakistani Supreme Court

Asia Bibi was convicted in 2010 after being accused by Muslim villagers of blasphemy. Gratefully, the Supreme Court eventually did not bow to the enormous ideological campaign of the fundamentalists, revoking Asia’s death sentence. Fighting persecution of Christian minorities is a top priority for the ECPM.

ECPM supports the cancellation of the budget reserve for Turkey

The European Parliament has adopted a proposal to cancel a budget reserve for pre-accession funds for Turkey. This reserve was created last year by the Parliament to pressurize Turkey into improving human rights, rule of law, democracy and press freedom. However, it is obvious now that these improvement did not happen. Therefore, ECPM fully supports the cancellation of the budget reserve.

Romanian Referendum on the definition on marriage will take place 6 and 7 October

It is already more than 2 years ago when 3 million Romanian citizens requested a referendum to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Last week both the Senate and the Romanian Constitutional Court gave a green light to a referendum on it. Last Tuesday, the Romanian government decided to established the dates for the referendum on the 6th and 7th of October.

It also acted as a gathering of deputies and representatives of the Slovak communities in Romania and representatives from Slovakia.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) reaffirmed on Thursday the 28th of June the right of children to be protected from all types of violence as they adopted a resolution based on a report by ECPM MP and Board Member Valeriu Ghiletchi (Republic of Moldova). The European Christian Political Movement (ECPM), represented in the European Parliament by six MEPs, was appalled by the recent statement of the President of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Mr. Mahmoud Abbas. On 30 April Mr Abbas declared that Jews brought the Holocaust on themselves. His apology, several days later and following massive international criticism, is welcomed but will only have meaning if followed by concrete action.

Alfie deserves another chance

Doctors in Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool yesterday removed life support from Alfie Evans, the 23 month old boy suffering from an unknown disease. The doctors argued that life support should be withdrawn for the boy, who has a rare degenerative brain disease and that the biggest part of his brain is damaged leading to a complete lack of functionality of his central nervous system.

Both marches represent significant demonstrations of the pro-life movement in America and Europe. ECPM President and MEP Škripek was present in Paris together with ECPM MEP Marek Jurek.

Open Doors: increasing persecution of Christians

Sadly enough, the worldwide persecution of Christians is increasing. One in twelve Christians experiences heavy or extremely heavy persecution. Together with Open Doors France, ECPM MEP Peter van Dalen and MEP Catherine Stihler organised an event in the European Parliament last week to present the list. "The outcomes are shocking," MEP van Dalen says.

Turkey must stop its attacks against the people of Afrin (Syria)

Turkey unleashed military aggression against the people of Northern Syria by shelling the Afrin region since last Monday and threatening to invade this part of Syria. The peoples of Afrin are calling for international pressure to stop this unwarranted aggression and the ECPM urges the European Union and its member states to put maximal pressure on Turkey to immediately stop this violence.

Help refugees return to Syria
