The appointment of a state supervisor at the critical newspaper Zaman has shown that President Erdogan does not respect freedom of press in Turkey. Furthermore, the amount of violence between Turkish security forces and Kurdish forces in Southeast Turkey has risen dramatically. Yet, Turkey does not allow any journalist in this area. These developments show that Erdogan's Turkey is becoming more and more an authoritarian state instead of a democracy.
The pragmatic way in which the European Union currently is negotiating with Turkey about membership is worrying. Apart from the fact that Greece (as a member of the European Union) is more deserving of our support and attention with regards to the refugee situation, ECPM once more wants to call attention to the fact that Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s Turkey is not fit for EU membership at all. Only yesterday morning, Turkish Prime Minster Ahmet Davutoglu has said that “Turkey wants to cooperate with the EU, but Turkey also wants EU membership”. However, taking into account the current Turkish policies, ECPM urges for the membership negotiations to be frozen immediately.
